Kate Somerville ExfoliKate Treatment

Kate Somerville’s award-winning ExfoliKate Intensive Exfoliating Treatment claims to be able to produce visibly smoother, brighter and healthier-looking skin after just one treatment.  It’s known as the “Hollywood 2-minute facial” and works to exfoliate the skin to give it that glowing post-facial look.

Both a chemical and physical exfoliant, ExfoliKate is formulated with the fruit enzymes of papaya, pineapple and pumpkin to exfoliate dead skin cells without over-drying the skin.  It uses lactic acid to chemically exfoliate the skin and silica to physically exfoliate it.  Salicylic acid helps improve pores, while aloe vera and honey soothe and soften skin. Rosewood and cinnamon extracts reduce the appearance of fine lines, while vitamins A, C and E provide antioxidant benefits and soy-lipid helps to rebuild the skin’s natural barrier function (if you read my Embryolisse review then you’ll know just how important it is to maintain the skin’s hydrolipidic film).

Now for the million dollar question – does it work?  After 2 minutes my skin genuinely does feel smoother and looks healthy and glowing, and after using the treatment consistently for a month I have definitely seen a huge improvement in my skin’s texture and overall glow!  My skin feels and looks fresh, healthy and glowing – there’s really no other way to describe it!  It’s the kind of exfoliator which is amazing to use before special event because it truly does give the skin a glow that I haven’t experienced with any other product.  No other exfoliator compares with this – and it isn’t abrasive either, so it’s not doing damage to the skin.  The ExfoliKate also smells really nice!  After spending an entire month trying to figure out what it smells like it wasn’t until I wrote ‘cinnamon’ in this review that I realised it smells exactly like cinnamon and cloves!  Delicious.

In terms of brightness, I have some acne-scars that I’m trying to fade, but I haven’t noticed a dramatic improvement.  Any amount of exfoliation will help with acne scars as exfoliating removes dead skin cells and increases blood circulation, so I’m sure this treatment will help in the long run.  The biggest improvement for me has been my skin’s texture and over-all healthy glow.  It most definitely holds the place of my holy grail exfoliator!

I like to use ExfoliKate in the shower when my face has been in the steam a bit – this helps to soften the skin, open pores and activate the fruit enzymes.  I definitely have found that the treatment works best this way!  It only needs to be left on the skin for 2 minutes.  All I do is squeeze out a pea-sized amount and massage it all over my face (avoiding the eye area!!!), then I leave it on my skin for a couple of minutes before washing it off.

The only negative thing that I’ve experienced with this product is that it can be very drying.  Kate Somerville recommends to only use it once or twice a week and there’s a good reason for that as overusing the product can really dry out your skin.  My skin is far from sensitive, in fact I’d describe it as very resiliant – nothing ever seems too harsh for my skin and I very rarely have an adverse reaction to products.  When I read that ExfoliKate should only be used once or twice a week I thought my skin could definitely handle twice a week, however, the exfoliator proved to be far too intense for that! (It isn’t called the intensive exfoliating treatment for nothing).  Another point to note is that using this treatment on active blemishes can sting quite a bit.  Happily, using this treatment once a week gives me the results I want while not drying out my skin, however, Kate Somerville does carry a gentle version of this treatment for those with sensitive skin.

Retailing for $135 NZD for the 60ml tube (or $38 for the 15ml), this treatment is a bit pricey.  While I don’t believe that price is indicative of quality, with this treatment you really are paying for actual results.  If you want a product that genuinely does make your skin look glowing and fresh, then I would just bite the bullet and pick up the ExfoliKate Treatment (if you live in New Zealand or Australia you could pop into Mecca Cosmetica and ask for a little sample so you can see how it will react with your skin).

The bottom line: Eat your vegetables, drink water and use the ExfoliKate Intensive Exfoliating Treatment for glowing skin!
